Top reasons to study this course

This course is for those with a Level 5 qualification in subjects like counselling, health and social care, or community work. It explores health and wellbeing through psychology, considering how theory and research help us understand people in various social, political, and economic contexts.

You’ll learn how psychology is applied in professional settings like health psychology, counselling, and clinical psychology to tackle health and wellbeing challenges. The course aims to develop critical thinkers who can integrate these perspectives into their practice.

You will gain skills to work within evidence-based frameworks that combine research, clinician expertise, and client values. Your research skills will be honed through an independent project on a topic of your choice, focusing on designing, delivering, and evaluating psychological interventions and therapies.

Graduates can pursue careers in services promoting mental and physical health in settings such as the NHS, education, and social care. This degree also provides a foundation for further postgraduate or professional study, such as our MSc Psychology conversion course or a research degree.

The course is delivered via a mix of face-to-face interactive lectures and workshops. You will be taught by an enthusiastic team of clinicians and academics with diverse research and practice interests, including vaccine hesitancy, living with long-term health conditions, nature and health, health-related stigma, and many more.

With a focus on case studies and practical examples, you’ll learn to apply research evidence and critical thinking to health and wellbeing issues. You’ll also collaborate with students from other psychology programmes, developing both collaborative and independent learning skills.

Assessments have been designed to develop the knowledge and skills required of critically reflective and ethical practitioners working within evidence-based practice.

Tasks for assessment include reflective portfolios, case studies, essays, presentations, and intervention and evaluation designs.

This course sets you up for postgraduate study and a career as a professional psychologist.

With this qualification, you’ll stand out from other counsellors or health and social care workers in the job market.

You’ll benefit from lecturers who work within the NHS as practitioner psychologists and researchers, as well as strong connections with local charities in mental health, wellbeing, and health psychology.

Graduates can pursue careers as psychological wellbeing practitioners, education mental health practitioners, wellbeing advisers, health trainers, social prescribers, and peer support workers.

Your future career is important to the course, and studying psychology at UoG aims to give you plenty of opportunities to develop your professional skills and employability.
